Most AI never shows you the cost.
We keep the receipts.

Every paid session, we calculate what our AI usage costs the planet, the carbon it emits and the water it consumes, and give at least 3x what it would cost to remove that carbon and restore that water.

No answer is free.

25 g CO2e

Our current estimate also averages 80 mL of fresh water per paid session.

I build AI. I also fish.

Fly fishing got hold of me about ten years ago. Once I had done the math on what we were building, I could not unsee my part in it.

Derrick, founder of Convena

A few degrees is all it takes.

All that electricity makes heat, and heat reaches the water. A trout's stream only has to warm a few degrees before it can no longer live there.

70° stress
77° lethal

3x by design.

Every paid session sets aside twice its estimated footprint cost for carbon removal and once more for river restoration. Two-thirds funds carbon removal through Climeworks; one-third funds river restoration through Trout Unlimited.

ClimeworksClimeworks
Carbon removal

We purchase at least 2x our estimated carbon footprint in certified removal through Climeworks direct air capture. Removals are delivered over several years.

Trout UnlimitedTrout Unlimited
River restoration

Our river giving is about 360x what it would cost, at current Water Restoration Certificate market prices, to restore the water our AI consumes, donated to Trout Unlimited's streamflow restoration work.

The more you use it, the more it gives back.

These are running totals from paid sessions and donation receipts. We donate monthly, then record the receipts here.

74 g
estimated carbon footprint tracked since July 2026

Avg. paid session: 25 g CO2e. We purchase at least 2x this footprint in certified removal.

240 mL
estimated fresh water consumed by AI usage

Avg. paid session: 80 mL. The Trout Unlimited share funds streamflow restoration via WRCs.

We show our work.

Each month we publish what paid usage costs the planet, what we have committed by formula, and what has actually been donated.

Methodology v1-2026-07: carbon uses EPA Supply Chain GHG Emission Factors v1.3 for NAICS 518210, a spend-based industry average that may overestimate frontier API physical emissions. Carbon removal pricing uses Climeworks retail direct-air-capture pricing, with removals delivered over several years. Water uses LBNL 2024 onsite cooling and indirect power-plant water intensity, Li et al. 2023, and Google's Gemini disclosure as a corroborating check. River restoration pricing uses BEF Water Restoration Certificates via Terrapass at $4 per 1,000 gallons; WRCs fund seasonal in-stream flow leases, not permanent gallons.
